In 1981, Del Mar's first Lifeguard Captain Gardner Stevens (top row, third from left) built the current lifeguard tower at 17th Street with his friend, Del Mar Fire Chief Jim Baker. He held the position from 1964-1982 and was followed by Lifeguard Captain Grant Larsen 1983-1997 (top row, third from the right), and Del Mar's current Community Services Director and Lifeguard Chief Pat Vergne (bottom row, third from the left). This photo was taken in 1981.   Photo courtesy of the Del Mar Lifeguards.
